Boris Groys: Multiple Authorship, 2005

Maybe there is no death as we know it.
Just documents changing hands.
Don DeLillo, White Noise
For a long time the social function of the exhibition was firmly fixed: the artist produced artworks, then these artworks were either selected and exhibited by the curator of an exhibition or rejected. The artist was considered an autonomous author. The curator of the exhibition, by contrast, was someone who mediated between the author and the public but was not an author himself. Thus the respective roles of artist and curator were clearly distinct: the artist was concerned with creation; the curator, with selection. The curator could only choose from the store of works that various artists have already produced. That meant that creation was considered primary; selection, secondary. Accordingly, the inevitable conflict between artist and curator was seen and treated as a conflict between authorship and mediation, between individual and institution, between primary and secondary. Now, however, that era is definitively over. The relationship between artist and curator has changed fundamentally. Although this did not resolve the old conflicts, they took on a completely different form.
It is simple to state why this situation changed: art today is defined by an identity between creation and selection. At least since Duchamp it has been the case that selecting an artwork is the same as creating an artwork. That, of course, does not mean that all art since then has become ready-made art. It does, however, mean that the creative act has become the act of selection: since that time producing an object is no longer sufficient for its producer to be considered an artist. One must also select the object one has made oneself and declare it an artwork. Accordingly, since Duchamp there has no longer been any difference between an object one produces oneself and one produced by someone else – both have to selected in order to be considered artworks. Today an author is someone who selects, who authorizes. Since Duchamp the author has become a curator. The artist is primarily the curator of himself, because he selects himself. And he also selects others: other objects, other artists. At least since the 1960s artists have created installations in order to demonstrate their personal practices of selection. The installations, however, are nothing other than exhibitions curated by artists, in which objects by others may be – and are – represented just as well as objects by the artist. Accordingly, however, curators are also freed of the duty to exhibit only those objects that are preselected by the artists. Curators today feel free to combine art objects selected and signed by artists with objects that are taken directly from “life“. In short, once the identity between creation and selection has been established, the roles of the artist and of the curator also became identical. A distinction between the (curated) exhibition and (artistic) installation is still commonly made, but it is essentially obsolete.
The old question must therefore be asked anew: what is an artwork? The answer that present-day art practices offer to this question is straightforward: the artwork is an exhibited object. The object that is not exhibited is not an artwork but merely an object that has the potential to be exhibited as an artwork. Not by chance, we speak of art today as “contemporary art“. It is art that must presently be exhibited in order to be considered art at all. The elementary unit of art today is therefore no longer an artwork as object but an art space in which this object is exhibited: the space of an exhibition, of an installation. Present-day art is not the sum of particular things but the topology of particular places. The installation has thus established an extremely voracious form of art that assimilates all the other traditional art forms: paintings, drawings, photographs, texts, objects, ready-mades, films, and recordings. All these art objects are arranged by an artist or curator in the space, according to an order that is purely private, individual, and subjective. Thus the artist or curator has a chance to demonstrate publicly his private, sovereign strategy of selection.
The installation is often denied the status of art because the question arises what the medium of an installation is. That is because the traditional art media are all defined according to the specific support of the medium: canvas, stone, or film. The medium of an installation is the space itself; and that means, among other things, that the installation is by no means “immaterial“. Quite the contrary, the installation is by all means material, because it is spatial. The installation demonstrates the material of the civilization in which we live particularly well, since it installs everything that otherwise merely circulates in our civilization. Hence the installation demonstrates the civilizational hardware that otherwise remains unnoticed behind the surface of circulation in the media. And it also shows the artist’s sovereignty at work: how this sovereignty defines and practices its strategies of selection. That is why the installation is not a representation of the relationships among things as regulated by economic and other social orders; quite the contrary, the installation offers an opportunity to use the explicit introduction of subjective orders and relations among things in order to call into question at least those orders that must be supposed to exist “out there“ in reality.
We must take this opportunity to clear up a misunderstanding that has come up again and again in the relevant literature recently. It has been argued with some insistence that art has reached its end today; and that therefore a new field – visual studies – should take the place of the old art history. Visual studies is supposed to extend the field of pictorial analysis: rather than considering artistic images exclusively, it is supposed to address the purportedly larger, more open space of all existing images, and to transgress courageously the limits of the old concept of art. The courage to transgress old limits is certainly always impressive and welcome. In this case, however, the transgression of limits turns out not to be an extension at all but rather a scaling down of the relevant spaces. As we have noted, art consists not of images but of all possible objects, including utilitarian objects, texts, and so on. And there are no distinct “artistic images“; rather, all images can be used in an artistic context. Turning art history into visual studies is thus not an extension of its field of study but a drastic reduction of it, since it restricts art to what can be considered an “image“ in the traditional sense. By contrast, everything that can be presented in an installation space belongs to the realm of the visual arts. In that sense, an individual image is also an installation; it is simply an installation that has been reduced to a single image. The installation is thus not an alternative to the image but precisely the extension of the concept of the image that is lost if this extension is ignored and the traditional concept of the image is readopted. If we want to extend the concept of the image, it is precisely the installation that we need to discuss, since it defines the universal rules for space by which all images and nonimages must function as spatial objects. In more than one respect the transition to the installation as the guiding form of contemporary art changes the definition of what we define as an artwork. The most significant and far-reaching change is to our understanding of authorship in art.
Increasingly today, people protest the traditional cult of artistic subjectivity, against the figure of the author, and against the authorial signature. This rebellion usually sees itself as a revolt against the power structures of the system of art that find their visible expression in the figure of the sovereign author. Again and again, the critics want to demonstrate that there is no such thing as an artistic genius, and consequently that the authorial status of the artist in question cannot be derived from the supposed fact that he is a genius. Rather, the attribution of authorship is seen as a convention used by the institution of art, the art market, and art critics to build up stars strategically and to profit from them commercially. The struggle against the figure of the author is thus understood as a struggle against an undemocratic system of arbitrary privileges and unfounded hierarchies that de facto represent base commercial interests. Naturally this rebellion against the figure of the author ends with the critics of authorship being declared famous authors, precisely because they have stripped the traditional figure of the author of its power. At first glance, we might see this as merely the well-known process of regicide at work, in which the king’s murderer is made the new king. It is not so simple, however. Rather, this polemic reflects on real processes that take place in the art world but that have yet to be adequately analyzed.
The traditional, sovereign authorship of an individual artist has de facto disappeared; hence it really does not make much sense to rebel against this authorship. When confronted with an art exhibition, we are dealing with multiple authorship. And in fact every art exhibition exhibits something that was selected by one or more artists; from their own production and/or from the mass of ready-mades. These objects selected by the artists are then selected in turn by one or more curators, who thus also share authorial responsibility for the definitive selection. In addition, these curators are selected and financed by a commission, a foundation, or an institution; thus these commissions, foundations, and institutions also bear authorial and artistic responsibility for the end result. The selected objects are presented in a space selected for the purpose; the choice of such a space, which can lie inside or outside the spaces of an institution, often plays a crucial role in the result. The choice of the space thus also belongs to the artistic, creative process; the same is true of the choice of the architecture of the space by the architect responsible and the choice of the architect by the committees responsible. One could extend at will this list of authorial, artistic decisions that, taken together, result in an exhibition taking one form or another.
Thus if the choice, the selection, the decision with respect to the exhibition of an object are to acknowledged as acts of artistic creation, then every individual exhibition is presented as the result of many such processes of decision, choice, and selection. From this circumstance result multiple, disparate, heterogeneous authorships that combine, overlap, and intersect, without it being possible to reduce them to an individual, sovereign authorship. This overlapping of multilayered, heterogeneous authorships is characteristic of any larger exhibition of recent years; and with time it becomes clearer and clearer. For example, at the most recent Venice Biennale several curators were invited to present their own exhibitions within the framework of a larger exhibition. Thus the result was a hybrid form between a curated exhibition and an artistic installation: the invited curators appear before the public as artists. But it is also frequently the case that individual artists integrate works by their colleagues in their own installations and thus they appear in public as curators. Consequently, authorial praxis as it functions in the contact of art today is increasingly like that of film, music, and theater. The authorship of a film, a theatrical production, or a concert is also a multiple one; it is divided among writers, composers, directors, actors, camera operators, conductors, and many other participants. And the producers should by no means be forgotten. The long list of participants that appears at the end of a film, as the viewers gradually begin to leave their seats and make their way to the exit, manifests the fate of authorship in our age, something the art system cannot escape.
Under this new regime of authorship the artist is no longer judged by the objects he has produced but by the exhibitions and projects in which he has participated. Getting to know an artist today means reading his CV, not looking at his paintings. His authorship is presumed to be only a partial one. Accordingly, he is measured not by his products but by his participation in the important exhibitions, just as an actor is judged by which roles he has played in which productions and which films. Even when one visits an artist’s studio to get to know his oeuvre, one is generally shown a CD-ROM documenting the exhibitions and actions in which the artist participated but also documenting the exhibitions, actions, projects, and installations that were planned but never realized. This typical experience of a studio visit today demonstrates how the status of the artwork has changed with respect to the new determination of authorship. The unexhibited artwork has ceased to be an artwork; instead, it has become art documentation. These documentations refer either to an exhibition that did indeed take place or to a project for a future exhibition. And that is the crucial aspect: the artwork today does not manifest art; it merely promises art. Art is manifested only in the exhibition, as in fact the very title Manifesta already states. As long as an object is not yet exhibited and as soon as it is no longer exhibited, it can no longer be considered an artwork. It is either a memory of past art or a promise of future art, but from either perspective it is simply art documentation.
The function of the museum is also modified thereby. Previously the museum functioned just as it does today, namely, as a public archive. But it was an archive of a special kind. The typical historical archive contains documents that refer exclusively to past events; it presumes the ephemerality, the mortality of the life it documents. And indeed the immortal does not need to be documented; only the mortal does. The assumption about the traditional museum, by contrast, was that it contained artworks that possess an eternal artistic value, that embodied art for all times equally, and that can fascinate and convince the present-day viewer as well. That is to say, they did not just document the past but could manifest and emanate art as such here and now. The traditional museum thus functioned as a paradoxical archive of eternal presence, of profane immortality; and in this it was quite distinct from other historical and cultural archives. The material supports of art – canvas, paper, and film – may be considered ephemeral, but art itself is eternally valid.
The museum today, by contrast, is increasingly like other archives, since the art documentation that the museum collects does not necessarily appear before the public as art. The permanent exhibition of the museum is no longer – or at least less frequently – presented as a stable, permanent exhibition. Instead, the museum is increasingly a place where temporary exhibitions are shown. The unity of collecting and exhibiting that defined the particular nature of the traditional museum has thus broken down. The museum collection today is seen as documentary raw material that the curator can use in combination with an exhibition program he has developed to express his individual attitude, his individual strategy for dealing with art. Alongside the curator, however, the artist also has the opportunity to shape museum spaces in whole or part according to his own personal taste. Under these conditions the museum is transformed into a depot, into an archive of artistic documentation that is no longer essentially different from any other form of documentation, and also into a public site for the execution of private artistic projects. As such a site the museum differs from any other site primarily in its design, in its architecture. It is no coincidence that in recent years attention has shifted from the museum collection to museum architecture.
Nevertheless, the museum today has not abandoned entirely its promise of profane immortality. The art documentation that is collected in museums and other art institutions can always be exhibited anew as art. This distinguishes the art projects collected in museums from the life projects documented in other archives: realizing art as art means exhibiting it. And the museum can do that. It is, admittedly, possible to present a life project anew in a reality outside the museum, but only if it itself ultimately concerns an artistic project. This kind of rediscovery of the art documentation is, however, only possible because it sticks to multiple authorship. Old art documents are restored, transferred to other media, and rearranged, installed, and presented in other spaces. Under such conditions it is meaningless to speak of an individual, intact authorship. The artwork as exhibited art documentation is kept alive because its multiple authorships continue to multiply and proliferate; and the site of this proliferation and multiplication of authorship is the present-day museum.
The transformation of the artwork into art documentation by means of its own archiving also enables art today to employ in an artistic context the immense reservoir of other documentations of events and projects that our civilization has collected. And indeed the formulation and documentation of various projects is the main activity of modern man. Whatever one wishes to undertake in business, politics, or culture, the first thing that must be done is to formulate a corresponding project in order to present an application for the approval or financing of this project to one or more responsible authorities. If this project is rejected in its original form, it is modified so that it can still be accepted. If the project is rejected entirely, one has no choice but to propose a new project in its place. Consequently, every member of our society is constantly occupied with drafting, discussing, and rejecting new projects. Assessments are written; budgets are precisely calculated; commissions are formed; committees are convened; and decisions are made. In the meanwhile, no small number of our contemporaries read nothing other than such projects, reports and budgets. Most of these projects, however, are never realized. The fact that they seem unpromising, difficult to finance, or undesirable in general to one or more experts is sufficient for the whole work of formulating the project to have been in vain.
And this work is by no means insubstantial; and the amount of work associated it with it grows over time. The project documentation presented to the various committees, commissions, and authorities is designed with increasingly effectiveness and formulated in greater detail in order to impress potential assessors. As a result, the formulation of projects is developing into an autonomous art form whose significance for our society has yet to be adequately considered. Irrespective of whether it is realized or not, every project presents a unique vision of the future that is itself fascinating and instructive. Frequently, however, many of the projects that our civilization is constantly producing are lost or simply thrown away after they are rejected. This careless approach to the art form of the project is quite regrettable, really, because it often prevents us from analyzing and understanding the hopes and visions of the future that are invested in these projects, and these things can say more about our society than anything else. Because within the system of art the exhibition of a document is sufficient to give it life, the art archive is particularly well suited to being the archive of these sorts of projects that were realized at some time in the past or will be realized in the future, but above all to being the archive of utopian projects that can never be realized fully. These utopian projects that are doomed to failure in the current economic and political reality can be kept alive in art, in that the documentation of these projects constantly changes hands and authors.

Claire Bishop, What is a curator

act (n.)

late 14c., "a thing done," from Latin actus "a doing; a driving, impulse, a setting in motion; a part in a play," and actum "a thing done" (originally a legal term), both from agere "to set in motion, drive, drive forward," hence "to do, perform," figuratively "incite to action; keep in movement, stir up," a verb with a broad range of meaning in Latin, including "act on stage, play the part of; plead a cause at law; chase; carry off, steal;" from PIE root *ag- "to drive, draw out or forth, move."
Theatrical ("part of a play," 1510s) and legislative (early 15c.) senses of the word also were in Latin. Meaning "one of a series of performances in a variety show" is from 1890. Meaning "display of exaggerated behavior" is from 1928, extended from the theatrical sense. In the act "in the process" is from 1590s, perhaps originally from late 16c. sense of the act as "sexual intercourse." Act of God "uncontrollable natural force" recorded by 1726.
An act of God is an accident which arises from a cause which operates without interference or aid from man (1 Pars. on Cont. 635); the loss arising wherefrom cannot be guarded against by the ordinary exertions of human skill and prudence so as to prevent its effect. [William Wait, "General Principles of the Law," Albany, 1879]
To get into the act "participate" is from 1947; to get (one's) act together "organize one's (disorderly) life" is by 1976.
act (v.)
mid-15c., "to act upon or adjudicate" a legal case, from Latin actus, past participle of agere "to set in motion, drive, drive forward," hence "to do, perform," also "act on stage, play the part of; plead a cause at law" (from PIE root *ag- "to drive, draw out or forth, move"). Most of the modern senses in English probably are from the noun. General sense of "to do, perform, transact" is from c. 1600. Of things, "do something, exert energy or force," by 1751. In the theater from 1590s as "perform as an actor" (intransitive), 1610s as "represent by performance on the stage" (transitive). Meaning "perform specific duties or functions," often on a temporary basis, is by 1804.
To act on "exert influence on" is from 1810. To act up "be unruly" is from 1903. To act out "behave anti-socially" (1974) is from psychiatric sense of "expressing one's unconscious impulses or desires" (acting out is from 1945). Related: Actedacting.

Running Room: Amur River, Border, Camera, Carer, Downsizing, Èlúnchūnzú, Foot-and-mouth Disease, Landscape, MǎnzhōuGuó, Metastasis, Paramnesia, Street Cleaning

1. Running Room is an anti-plan intending to run away from the perfect plan. The curatorial method elaborated by Daewoong Ahn, once adopted in the project called Laboratory (2016) at Community Space Litmus, Ansan, with several artists. Suspending a completion of the art work, produced the ideas in the middle of the production course being saved, shared, discussed, and extended. In Laboratory, curator and artists had so-called positive feedback each other, so that artists presented the result-in-the-course in their own way, probably provisionally, in which any limitation or curatorial recommendations had not involved. Running Room followed the former Laboratory curatorial method. Curator and artists had feedback each other about the ideas of specific district, Dae-rim-dong in Seoul. The feedback, too, proceeded in the manner of automatism, provisional and impulsive. In doing so, the key words elaborated by artists: Amur River, border, camera, carer, downsizing, Èlúnchūnzú, foot-and-mouth disease, landscape, MǎnzhōuGuó, metastasis, paramnesia and street cleaning, which come to the subtitle of Running Room.

2. Litmus located in Wongok-dong, Ansan opened in 2007 has dealt with multi-culturalism, where Haemin Ryu worked and participated the several projects, including festivals, exhibitions and language study during 2013-5. In doing so, she felt certain ashamed regarding making relationship between immigrants, which has been often used up as casual subject-matter of the art. Ryu felt need to more theoretical background, which came to her motivation to enter a graduate school. Studying and working together in Seoul, Ryu's interest of Wongok-dong slightly moved to Daerim-dong, closer to Seoul, at the same time, much similar to Wongok-dong. So, the subject-matter of Running Room began with Wongok-dong, and has passed through Daerim-dong.

3, Running Room conceived as an alternative of the conventional art production protocol today, especially in Seoul. Contemporary art grant institution in Korea put the art structurally on a conveyor belt, which goes like in this way: planning, application, presentation, receiving the money, working and finally settlement. This reasonable administration process expects the work completed before actual completion. Perhaps, it would be not that wrong if one says the very essential part of the art production today exists in presentation files. The perfect promise collaged with Word and Photoshop, which is the most factual references to qualified/not-qualified procedure. That is to say, grant institution which possibly would allow the autonomy of the art, now has been regulating the possibility of the art work from the very beginning of the production. Could the art today run away from this conveyor belt? This is the question Running Room wants to suggest.

4. People today simply think of Daerim-dong as lamb skewers. While working and saving money and opening lamb skewer restaurant have come to 'dream of middle class' of Cháoxiǎnzú, ethnic Korean in China, today's enthusiasm towards Mat-Jib (Korean slang, good place to eat) have formed the lamb skewer business area in Daerim-dong. Here, we see Daerim-dong as hip place of lamb skewer restaurants, therefore instagramable. In the different view, Daerim-dong often has been represented as illegal place. Its representation has been intermittently repeated even in recent case called female police attacking incident in Daerim-dong. While manic reactions from so-called the Left and the Right emerged on this issue, the words Daerim-dong or 40 years old Cháoxiǎnzú man intermittently had been represented on the media in a very coldhearted manner, even very rarely. Here, we see Daerim-dong as "Criminal City," therefore the object to be policed. Lamb skewers which gives us pleasure, and the drunken pleasure of 40 years old Cháoxiǎnzú man are incommensurable, therefore to be controlled. So, the sense surrounding Daerim-dong has been distributed unequally, in fact which should be. Daerim-dong is supposed to be a pleasure place to us, Korean in this way. However, In the realistic, lamb skewers hold an not quite great position in Daerim-dong. Here, dried tofu, Chinese pepper, Yabian melon and etc., which simply excesses the pleasure of lamb skewers, which have been constituting their life form. These other pleasures are important subject-matter of Running Room.

5. What Film-maker Minwook Oh explored here is the residues of which could not be parts of a brand new film, Letters to Buriram (2019) which firstly presented in 24th Busan International Film Festival. According to an email from Oh, "walking on the Daerim-dong, seeing the landscape, I had recalled two places. Harbin and shamans. The feeling was unavoidably striking my head rather than recalling a certain paramnesia. That is to say, the landscape of Harbin and shaman where I have been to in order to making the film since 2017, was hitting on my head. Walking on the Daerim-dong street, I realized that it is impossible to not recall the landscape of Harbin and shamans. This unavoidably was replaying inside of my head. [...] Then, I came back to Busan by a train. Getting off at Busan Train Station, my sight had been choosing preferentially a china town across a street. Visiting Jun-ju one more time and the film was completed, and then came back to Busan by bus, with people who speak possibly Chinese. Now I am thinking of researching the residue which could not become the film while the last Sunday of September is passing by."

6. Famously known as a Pop artist, Youngmean Kang spreads out an automatism on a A0 size wall chart. The following is a certain conversation on Kakao Talk: "[Kang] [10:08 AM] The idea of the oriental peace=Asianism [Kang] [10:09 AM] I am chasing after groups sharing an archi-type of Asianism and its idea before coming itself to Japanese imperialism. 7. Jaeha Ban collaged the logic of the capitalism using immigrants in general in Korea. She says: "The story I have continuously been interested in is a ironical logic of a function of border or sovereignty. [...] Every year local governments proceed the stamping out animals that get foot-and-mouth disease as well as AI, African swine fever, and so on. Corporations smelling the money have emerged because of this. These corporations have mobilized of course precarious day laborers as well. Stamping out laborers are consisted of approximately 100% of immigrants. In stamping out process, I would like to set aside suicides of the laborers or deaths of government officers from overwork. Laborers are exposed to the dead bodies during all the process of stamping out. Obviously, their traumas, basic education and man power caring have not been a consideration at all. The county suspending visa control pulling in immigrants, distributing the whole amount of a budget to the stamping out companies, everybody no needs to do troublesome works. If foot-and-mouth disease is a signifier, in the other side, there is a logic of the capital called Downsizing. And I would like to set the Border which is a code binding the Foot-and-mouth disease and Downsizing. Immigrants and downsizing can be exist because of the border."

8. Gihyun Jo, as a film-maker, part-time navvy and carer, undergoing inside conflicts between life and aesthetic, is making a question: a sense of authority which is normally believed to be its undermined condition today, is it able to recuperate in the documentary again? "But I [...] thought that making less gap of 'a form which might be able to be qualified in the institution' is a smart strategy artists can take on. I thought it was kind of a tuning, like a frequency, art institutions into life. Michel Gondry's work, The Thorn in the Heart (2009) could be a good example. This documentary shows a story of making a life-history of Gondry's aunt supported by a family of Gondry and staffs of. This film is full of everyday life story such as meeting aunt's old friends and recalling passed days and having dinner together. Completing 70-80% of the film, the edited version of the film is presented to the family. The film shows a son of aunt who came out and her feeling regarding this. They eventually know each other in the process of making the film, so that came to a reconciliation after decades. It's not that dramatic, but they still have become able to talk about coming-out event as a topic. I thought this is a good example in which obtaining some aesthetic quality in the cinematic situation and an authority of everyday-life-community are gathered together."

9. Running room is the critical term coined by American art critic Hal Foster, in fact, at the same time, which is the english translation of German critic Karl Kraus' term spielraum, a function distinguishing art from kitsch. It is obvious that we need the room, because, even if we could define status quo as 'the age of grant,' existence of Black List of the Left artists was revealed as the fact. Art production conveyer belt is similar, when it comes to presentation session, always qualified/not-qualified judgement here. This power have constructed the art world now. Agreed? Nevertheless, if we still want to call the art should be different, this semi-autonomous room suggested by Foster would be not very bad choice. Running away from endlessly recuperating quasi-arts using grants for fuel and infinitely idling grant institutions using quasi-arts for fuel, the curatorial of Running Room tried to recall the semi-autonomous sense of the art.

1. Running Room is an anti-plan, running out of the perfect plan. The curatorial method elaborated by Daewoong Ahn, once adopted in the project called Laboratory at Community Space Litmus, Ansan, in 2016-7, with several artists. Suspending completion of the art work, the ideas in the middle of the production course being saved, shared, discussed, and extended.

2, Running Room conceived as an alternative of the conventional art production protocol today, especially in Seoul. Contemporary art grant institution put the art on a conveyer belt, which goes like in this way: planning, application, presentation, receiving the money, working and finally settlement. This reason administration process expects the work completed before actual completion. Perhaps, it would be not that wrong if the very essential part of the art production today exists in presentation files. The perfect promise collaged with Word and Photoshop, which is the most factual references to yes/no procedure. That is to say, grant institution which possibly would allow the autonomy of the art, now has regulated the possibility of the art work from the very beginning of the production. Could the art today run out of this conveyer belt of the production protocol? This is the question Running Room wants to suggest.

Design and Crime (and Other Diatribes)』 (2012)에서 처음 등장했고, 2002년에 렘 쿨하스가 쓴 「정크스페이스 Junkspace」 (2002)을 재방문한 「동시대 디자인의 ABC The ABCs of Contemporary Design」 (2012)와 두 에세이의 합본인 『정크스페이스와 러닝룸 Junkspace with Running Room』 (2013)에서 더욱 구체화되었다.

About the Exhibition

Live in Your Head. When Attitudes Become Form: Works, Concepts, Processes, Situations, Information appears to lack unity, looks strangely complicated, like a compendium of stories told in the first person singular. We might ask the justifiable question: Are we here concerned with a new edition of Tachisme, with a subjective art, with a reaction against geometry which has reigned supreme in recent years? Certainly, the majority of artists exhibiting here might be seen as part of an artistic development to which the preexperienced workprocess of Duchamp, the intensity of Pollock’s gesture, and the unity of material, physical exertion and time in the Happenings of the early ‘60s also belong. And yet for some of these artists the desire to create does not spring from purely visual experiences. It was inevitable that Hippie philosophy, the Rockers, and the use of drugs should eventually affect the position of a younger generation of artists. It is significant that some of the major exhibitors come from the West coast of America, an area particularly open to Eastern influences. Many anti-social ideas, on the one hand the tendency to contemplation, and on the other the celebration of the physical and creative self through action, can be seen at work in this new art. Additional parts of the pattern can be found in Europe: the lack of a real centre has persuaded increasing numbers of artists to remain in their home towns and to work against all the ideas and principles of the society in which they found themselves. Evident at the same time is the desire to break down the ‘triangle in which art operates’ – the studio, gallery, and museum.

So far no one has given this complex phenomenon a satisfactory name and category, in the same way that Pop, Op, and minimal art were quickly put into categories. Names suggested so far – Anti-form," "MicroEmotive Art," "Possible Art," "Impossible Art," "Concept Art," "Arte Povera," "Earth Art" – each describe only one aspect of the style: the obvious opposition to form: the high degree of personal and emotional engagementl the pronouncement that certain objects are art, although they have not previously been indentified as suchl the shift of interest away from the result toward the artistic process; the use of mundane materials; the interaction of work and material; Mother Earth as medioum, workplace, the desert as concept.

Noticeable is the absolute freedom in the use of materials, as well as the concern for the physical and chemical properties of the work itself. Whereas two years ago polyester and computers were the media that fascinated progressive artists and at the same time determined the area of expression, nowadays the medium no longer seems importatnt in the newest art. The belief in technology has been superseded by the belief in the artistic process. The major characteristic of today’s art is no longer the articulation of space but of human activity; the activity of the artist has become the dominant theme and content. It is in this way that the title of the present exhibition should be understood (it is a sentence rather than a slogan). Never before has the inner bearing of an artist been turned so directly into a work of art. Naturally enough it has always been the same. Mondrian and Pollock gave form to their inner bearing, but always in terms of the finished product, the autonomous object. The artists represented in this present exhibition are in no way object-makers. On the contrary, they aspire to freedom from the object, and in this way deepen the levels of meaning of the object, reveal the meaning of those levels beyond the object. They want the artistic process itself to remain visible in the end product and in the ‘exhibition’.” It is significant that the mass of their own bodies, the power of human movement plays an enormous role for these artists and creates the new "alphabet of form and material" (Trini).

A large group of artists, like the earth artists, are not represented by works, but with information; and the conceptual artists are represented by working plans, which no longer require further realization. This conceptual art readily makes use of existing systems (telephone, post, press, cartography) to create its "works," and these eventually lead to new systems, which prevent all discussion of their starting points.

Works, concepts, processes, situations, information (we consciously avoied the expressions object and experiment) are the "forms" through which these artistic positions are expressed. They are "forms" derived not from preformed pictorial opinions but from the experience of the artistic process inself. This dictates both the choice of material and the form of work as the extension of gesture. This gesture can be private, intimate, or public and expansive. But the process itself always remans vital; it is "handwriting and style" simultaneously. Thus the meaning of this art lies in the fact that an entire generation of artists has undertaken to give "form" to the "nature of art and artists" in terms of a natual process.

The Myth of the Slovene Stag: Neue Slowenische Kunst and the Reprocessing of Traditional Symbolism – Alexei Monroe

Over-identification is often discussed in terms of ideology, performance or politics. However, the specific visual, sonic and symbolic motifs used to produce over-identification effects sometimes receive less attention. Therefore it may be useful be to explore one of the most commonly used motifs of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK), the Stag. An understanding of the dynamics associated with this is critical to any detailed analysis of NSK’s “retrograde” mode of over-identification. There are similarities between NSK and the “symbolic Stag” that appears in folklore, art and mass visual culture. Both have seemingly clear meanings but are actually more transitory and multi-faceted and NSK’s “Slovene Stag” leaves elusive and illusory tracks and scents. In Celtic tradition it is one of the three oldest animals and the emergence of such a primeval symbol in ultra-contemporary underground culture at first seems surprising but this only underlines its continued and surprising relevance within the most unlikely contexts.

Over-identification is a term first associated with the actions of the group Laibach Kunst in early eighties Yugoslavia. Slavoj Žižek later theorised it in his 1993 article Why are Laibach and NSK not Fascists?[1] He described what he called an “aggressive inconsistent mixture” of contradictory symbolisms that had the effect of “bringing to light the obscene superego underside of the system” by seeming to over-identify with its rituals. He also stresses that this is linked to the doubt and fear created by these interventions, effects generated by the lack of the usual artistic-ironic distance towards kitsch, propaganda and other elements that tend to alarm so-called “enlightened intellectuals.” One tactical question that emerges from NSK’s work is whether a symbol such as the Stag is irredeemably kitsch or reactionary, or whether its manipulation can produce valuable and unexpected effects.

Dictation of the Motif

“Our work refers to the entire history of art, politics and mankind in general.” (Laibach)[2]

NSK over-identifies (or seems to over-identify with) a series of mental, ideological and cultural regimes. It has attracted most attention and condemnation for its use of totalitarian symbolism, however, one means by which it has created the semi-illusory spectacle of a national cultural movement has been the use of much older traditional symbolism including pastoral motifs such as the sower or the Slovene hay-rack known as the kozolec and one of its ‘ur-motifs’, the Stag. From early cave art onwards, the Stag has been one of the most frequently used and powerful symbols, recurring throughout art history in Europe and beyond. This means that although it is often used in a kitsch/ironic way, its deployment can still trigger subconscious or pre-rational associations and it carries a primal charge.

Politically, it is strongly associated with hunting, and with what are characterised as anti-cosmopolitan provincial attitudes. This is certainly the way it is deployed in populist Austrian Heimatfilme such as Der Förster vom Silberwald (1954). It appears as a symbol of non-alienated traditional values. In Austria and to a lesser extent in Slovenia, hunters (who wear antler symbols on their clothing) are generally viewed as an inherently reactionary group by outsiders. The stag is a power symbol deployed by specific hierarchies and their client groups (rural populations who defend what are basically feudal relations). While it also appears as a symbol in contemporary contexts it is seen as being tainted by association with a value system antithetical to any contemporary art and culture, let alone ideas such as bruitism, Punk or performance art. Additionally, leaders such as Tito or Franz Ferdinand (who boasted of having shot 3000 stags) have used the practice and symbolism of hunting as a symbol of political virility and the stag was traditionally seen as a royal animal. Thus, the Stag as a symbol always carries the metaphorical scent of blood, suggesting particular hierarchies and traditional practices and codes of honour. Therefore NSK’s appropriation of it was as much a (symbolic) political challenge as its appropriation of state and ideological symbolism.

Who Doubts the Terrible Power of these Horns? Construction of the New Acropolis

“LAIBACH and NSK analyzed nationalism through the aesthetic dimension. By placing ‘national and subnational’ symbols alongside each other, we demonstrated their ‘universality’. That is, in the very process of one nation defining its difference against the other, it frequently uses the same, or almost the same, kind of symbols and rhetoric as the other. In short, nations are not very original at all when it comes to defining their own originality – their ‘raison d’etre’ – against each other. Indeed, they often use exactly the same arguments and symbols (compare, for instance, the use of the eagle symbol by the Germans, Americans, Albanians, Austrians, Poles, etc.). Paradoxically, then, nationalistic conflict between nations are usually not the result of differences, but because the differences are too small (for instance, only a few English people know that they’re essentially an English-speaking Germanic tribe). Such nationalism is based on ‘the narcissism of small differences’. It is the most popular, most European and most fatal. Also in the countries of ex-Yugoslavia.”[3] (Laibach)

Given the extent to which it is bound up with representations of power, it should be no surprise that the stag has been central to NSK’s iconography since 1982. Like all NSK’s appropriated symbols, the stag is structurally paradoxical. NSK made it into a symbol of new Slovene art and subsequently of the NSK State in Time, but it actually began its symbolic journey in 19th century Scotland. The source of the stag that features most frequently in NSK visual art works is actually Landseer’s famous painting The Monarch of the Glen (1851), an iconic Scottish image that appears in numerous commercial contexts such as Glenfiddich whisky and Campbell’s soup packaging. It is interesting to note that NSK have always found an appreciative audience in Scotland, exhibiting there before London and that there are some similarities between Scotland’s place in the UK and Slovenia’s place in the old Yugoslavia (northern nations within larger multi-national states). NSK’s appropriation of the monarch was in fact a sequel to Peter Blake’s pop art version (despite appearances pop art works and techniques were an important precedent for NSK). In this respect, “there is no Slovene Stag” and this original foreign source points to the spectral nature of NSK’s performance of national mobilisation.

The “Slovenization” of the monarch began in 1982 with the exhibition Ausstellung Laibach Kunst in Ljubljana, the first manifestation of what Laibach termed the “monumental retro-avant-garde.” A reproduction of the monarch was featured surrounded by Xeroxed images of a monumental worker figure and the controversial name Laibach (the historic German term for Ljubljana). In this context, the monarch was conspicuous as a ‘high art’ retro presence within an aggressively contemporary multimedia installation. This temporal tension between ultra-traditional and ultra-contemporary is one of Laibach’s most characteristic qualities and is intrinsic to what we can call the “Laibach effect” – the generation of contradictory audience interpretations from the same source.

By the end of 1983, Laibach was performing in London at the end of the first stage of its first Occupied Europe Tour. Laibach performed an extremely challenging combination of industrial music with atonal classical elements and were a fixture on the international avant-garde scene. At a concert at London’s Diorama venue, Laibach first placed a stag’s head on stage. Although it was thrown into the audience during the show, stag’s heads went on to become an expected element of every Laibach show during the 1980s. In some cases, antlers alone were used, sometimes attached to a Laibach painting. In other cases a full scale hunting trophy was used. The significance of this was that Laibach deployed something simultaneously Völkisch, ideological and primeval as part of contemporary culture, rendering the archaic contemporary and the contemporary archaic. This was exactly the type of allegedly reactionary symbolism that other alternative artists and musicians would see as untouchable. For Laibach it was an essential part of a strategy designed to make it seem more powerful and absolute than any “actually existing” state could then be.

Its use also represented a sinister temporal dislocation, an allusion to what majority opinion likes to believe is a safely surpassed dark past. In the senso-brutalist[4] context of a Laibach concert the normally concealed power of the archetypal image is revealed, stripped of its normal ‘reasurring’ folksiness (which Laibach reveal as being connected to force, terror and mobilisation.) Laibach’s over-identification gave it (and themselves) more power than it actually possessed, aiding the construction of its own illusory power.

Here we have to acknowledge that there was also an element of fanatical absurdism present. British audiences in particular tended to view the antlers as proof that the entire spectacle was ‘really’ or ‘primarily’ a joke, and thus that it had no further implications. Some British reviews even reported that Laibach wore the antlers and seemed to need to emphasise the ludicrous aspects, as if they discounted the overall presentation. This overlooked the discomforting to which Laibach’s use of such symbolism was and remains ‘for real’ and is very far from the standard mocking position of many artists. In the Central European/Alpine context the stag is certainly a kitsch symbol but its use by Laibach seemed deadly serious because of its ongoing association with reactionary political forces.

However, the Stag was much more than a curious stage prop. The ambivalently-titled 1985 live album Neu Konservatiw features another less placid Landseer image of a terrified drowning stag. The monarch appeared again on the cover of Laibach’s 1986 album Nova akropola this time with a cross between its antlers, an allusion to the legend of St. Hubert, patron saint of hunters. Nova akropola’s literally exorcistic track Vade Retro (Satanas) also features a stag. From the midst of an extremely harsh sound-field the sampled call of a rutting stag emerges. Once again, the familiar symbol becomes associated with primeval terror and fascination, re-emerging as a force of nature as relevant and disturbing in 1986 as in 986. Many artists use natural references but what is present here is a natural archetype, more intimidating than welcoming and integral to Laibach’s over-identification with ‘eternal’ values and laws. This also took the form of appropriating traditional Tyrolean style hunting clothes of a type now rarely seen in Slovenia but still present in Austria. Laibach even wore the insignia of the Slovene Hunting Association (SLD) and their videos feature Stag clips from hunting films. This hunting image soon drew fire from some certain quarters and Laibach played out a more honestly reactionary role than actual hunters now tend to. Asked if they were aware of the animal rights movement they replied “We know about it, but the animals don’t.”

This stance was also significant as it dramatised the fact that even under the modernity of self-management socialism hunting motifs and Alpine symbolism remained present in Slovene culture (which despite the official emphasis on the “Brotherhood and Unity” of the Yugoslav peoples still bore traces of its former Austrian rulers). Laibach’s image in this period was more typical of southern Austria or Bavaria than of contemporary Slovenia, yet it paradoxically managed to transmit an internationalised Sloveneness via an excessive “Germania”.

Alongside Laibach stood the other NSK groups, all of which used the stag or antlers as one of the symbolic building blocks of the Gesamtkunstwerk that eventually became the NSK State in Time. Indeed, antlers form a key part of NSK’s insignia. The visual arts collective IRWIN took the Slovene stag and subjected it to an intensive process of multiplication, and continue to take into new contemporary contexts. Representations of the Stag comprise an entire iconographic series in IRWIN’s Icons project.[5] These stags are juxtaposed with incongruous elements such as lego bricks or modernist motifs. The oppositions set up by the contradictory elements further complicate the status of the Slovene Stag, further removing it from a directly national role. Additionally, many of their installations featured stags and other hunting trophies, creating the impression of a dislocated temporal space similar to Laibach’s concert environments. Like Laibach, IRWIN takes the Stag both back to the classicist aesthetics of oil painting and European tradition and forward into the digital context. This is intrinsic to their original self-identified role as “state artists” – a category that obviously disturbs those unable to accept the legitimacy of over-identification.

In 1986 NSK created its most monumental collective presentation, the performance Krst pod Triglavom (Baptism under Triglav). IRWIN provided the scenography and Laibach the music for the production by NSK drama group Scipion Nasice. Here again, Stags and hunting motifs were central to what would have seemed to outsiders to be an exercise in nationalist assertion. The reality is more complex. Krst’s theme was the forced conversion and colonisation of the pagan Slovenes by German forces in the 9th Century. It addressed the extent to which Slovene identity has been endangered and suppressed by its larger neighbours and the paradoxical possibility of asserting Sloveneness using international sources. Alongside the Slovene historical and mythological references, NSK employed the art of Kandinsky, Tatlin and Malevich and the Slovene “historical avant-garde”, the music of Kraftwerk, Bruckner, Liszt and more. Laibach were not only reprocessing the German classical canon, but even Völksmusik. NSK successfully used the Germanic imagery and culture that traditionally dominated the Slovene space in order to transmit the previously repressed culture within the heartland of the former enemy.

In this way a small so-called “unhistorical” culture of two million people assumed symbolic ‘great power’ status in the cultural sphere, insisting on its right to recognition while acknowledging the foreign influences upon it. Slovene culture and language have historically been known to very few foreigners and prior to NSK there was no precedent for its systematic international transmission. Here we can see why some of NSK’s harshest critics remain conservative Catholic nationalists who resent the linking of “their” national symbols with foreign and avant-garde sources. Over-identification has exposed some of the private national-folk power rituals that lose their kitsch innocence and effectiveness when exposed. However, we can also see why the Völkisch imagery made so dangerously credible by the Slovene Stag and other signifiers causes alarm. Yet the career of the appropriated and (inter)nationalised, multiplied and industrialised Slovene Stag is the clue that NSK is always also pointing away from or through what it seems to point unambiguously towards.

Progressive Alpinism?

The trajectory of the Slovene stag suggests that the presence of the archaic and the traditional are deeply embedded in the contemporary. Such symbols adapt and mutate to changing times and find new hosts and carriers.

In a sense, the ‘New Slovene Stag’ stands for everything over-identification implies: the refusal not to use tainted symbols. It’s clear why this type of symbolism enrages many on the left, but NSK’s appropriation also affects the Right. Looking at it closely, it becomes clear how with the opulence and monumentality of its representations, NSK created an abstracted spectacle with which no actual state or nationalist manifestation could compete. In the Slovene context, NSK’s appropriation of symbolism that would normally be used by government or far-right groups has been so complete as to alienate it from its natural constituencies. This type of appropriation can amount to a kind of counter-contamination that permanently stains its subjects. They are stained both with the normally concealed power associations and with their use by artists seen as decadent by many. The intensive repetition of motifs sustains the necessary illusion of fanaticism but in the process can dilute the actual fanaticism associated with them, taking them further from their original sources and complicating the enjoyment of those used to exercising a monopoly over them.

The foreign source of the Slovene Stag was paradoxically central to the way in which NSK (re)-invented the traditions of its own semi-fictional nation and then transmitted them internationally. It guaranteed an internal distance while presenting a monumental and threatening external façade that seemed to contain no distance whatsoever. This is central to the most aggressive forms of over-identification – there should initially seem to be no possible space for doubt, even though contradictory symbolism is present. Those confronted by it have to be left to work out whether there is any distance and of what type. Over-explanation has to be avoided and the possibility, even the probability, of misinterpretation has to be accepted. In fact, if the phenomenon does not at least some of the time appear to be what people most fear it to be then it will be less effective. To paraphrase Laibach, “all interpretations must be correct”: the negative as well as the positive. Laibach’s demonisation as nationalists has sometimes worked as positive propaganda, amplifying the effects of its interventions. Over-identification means accepting the likelihood of being identified (only) with the most demonic aspects of the regime the technique is applied to and of being “shot by both sides”. It should be “red in tooth and claw”, encoding painfully real elements of power and in the process alienating them from those who normally wield them.

Obviously there are risks associated with reprocessing the type of power symbolism intrinsic to over-identification, but it has to be asked whether abstaining from this is any less risky. The fact that symbols such as the Stag have been contaminated by the Nazis and others actually demands a counter-contamination. Many on the left engage in a ceaseless kulturkampf against this type of traditional European symbolism, claiming that any use of it (except perhaps the most contemptuously ironic) is unacceptable. However, they will not fade away because they are ignored or even criminalised by enlightened elites. In fact, this simply leaves a potentially powerful symbolic arsenal as the unchallenged property of the Right and makes plausible propaganda about progressive forces being intent on destroying all tradition. This censorious approach which amounts to a refusal to “get their hands dirty” is a colossal tactical error. There is no possibility of any non-aggression pact by both sides abstain from symbolic warfare so on this front there should be no question of what amounts to unilateral symbolic disarmament. Here then is the challenge presented by the example of NSK: why should such symbolism not be taken deadly seriously as a legitimate weapon and why should ‘we’ not appropriate it for counter-cultural irregular use? Entire categories of imagery and tradition cannot be proscribed without generating massive opposition. The challenge is to find and construct non-reactionary modes of using and even respecting these categories. Why not a “progressive Alpinism” as is already apparent in the work of the Austrian group Attwenger? By now there are enough examples of such reclamation and reprocessing strategies out there, and perhaps the time has come to stop talking and “just do it!”

(xiii)

Electronic Systems Laboratory of the MIT에서 극렬하게 연구되어왔다.

Cybernetics, p. 38.
